Title: Finances & Government of Canterbury 1700 - 1850; An Overview
Abstract: In the period 1700-1835, the self perpetuating governing elite of Canterbury, under pressure of social and economic change, had a measure of success in adapting its rule to manage and accommodate such changes, while attempting to maintain overall control of the City and its commercial activities. The middling background of the members of the elite, and their close contact with the governed, may have helped maintain stability in times of crisis.
